Your first foray into the world of search engines optimization (SEO) might seem intimidating at the number of things to learn. You might be forced to turn away and never look back, even though you know how important it is for your site’s growth. Many search engine optimizers have been in the field for more than a decade, learning new things as Google rolls out new algorithms that keep them scrambling to learning these new updates.
As with anything in life, there’s a learning curve, and in the vast world of SEO, it is no different. Once you’ve crossed that threshold, you’ll have to learn the new tricks and strategies that are released. You don’t want to seem like the rookie who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
The more knowledge and experience you have, you increase your chances of getting better at SEO; this is usually for the big guys with the big bucks. But if you have a tight budget, no worries, you only need to know the basics. And we’ll be giving those to you.
The Very Beginning
This is vital. To get started in anything, you have to know the fundamentals of that thing. There are lots of harmonious factors that work together. Factors like:
- On-page SEO
- Off-page SEO. and
- Technical SEO
Backlinks
The best links today are not built but earned. A well thought-out piece, non-derivative piece (or even if it is derivative, so long as it is informational and thorough) has the probability of going viral, causing more people to cite it as a go-to reference for their contents.
Since you won’t always get to post original pieces, you can also look to existing contents, refine it, revamp its structure, and make it your own (as long as the subject matter is well within your niche).
You can always guest post to a publication that has your audience. Never stray away from your niche, else, you risk the chance of losing your audience.
Basic On-Page Ranking Components
This part is complex and very varied; usually confusing to non-SEO enthusiasts. Although, as a starter, you can always skip the technical aspects and focus on the basics.
Add descriptive meta titles (make them unique) and meta descriptions for every page on your site. This helps the search engine when a user types in a set of keywords. Make your website easy to navigate. Have a great descriptive content on your site.
Also, make sure your site is well optimized for mobile use.
Content Marketing
You’ll need to get yourself schooled on the best marketing tools for your content. You’ll need strategies to push your blog up the rungs of the search engine ladder; guest posts and an onsite blog. Find out what your niche is, where you can find them, and cater to that audience.
Give them valuable contents. Detailed Contents. Fresh contents. This isn’t only useful but critical to your SEO. Search engines are very particular about this. Write incisive topics, something that would catch the eye of a reader and make them want to come back for more.
Build External Relationships
Use social media and other sites to do this. Doing this can lead to more SEO opportunities. Reach out to other publications (within your niche only), their editors, and ask for an opportunity to feature as a guest post; through this, you can create a channel/link that leads back to your website. Imagine if people enjoyed your post thoroughly, now imagine the number of traffic you’ll be getting.
Knowing these things won’t automatically grant you the ticket to the top of Google’s searches, but they are worth knowing. All you need, for a starter, is a solid foundation.
